What makes this journey so different? If you’ve been through profound hardship in your life, you’ve probably heard someone say to you, “I can’t even imagine.”
That’s the difference with pregnancy after loss. We CAN imagine. We can imagine sitting in a tense room while we’re told “I’m sorry there’s no heartbeat” or “the diagnosis is terminal” or “there’s nothing more we can do” or “‘let us know when you’re ready to unplug the machines.”
We can imagine because we’ve been there. We’ve lived it once….or more. We know that look on the doctors or nurses face. We know the look of pity in their eyes and the sound of it in their voices. We know the anxious waiting for answers that feels like you’re hanging over the apex of a rollercoaster agonizing over a drop that can’t come soon enough.
We know the silence, we know the feeling of having a million questions but choking on the words to ask. We know the urge to fast forward to whatever comes next while wanting to rewind to the blissful naivety of five minutes prior. We know the danger of hoping.
We’ve lost a sense of invincibility we never knew we had, and still we choose to do it all again, and that’s what makes it so different.
Raise your hand if you “CAN imagine” 🙋♀️ Then give yourself a pat on the back and remind yourself you’re #toughasamother #toughasaparent 👊
